The University of Khartoum Library was established in 1945 and is considered the largest and oldest library in Sudan. It is open to students and faculty of the University of Khartoum, and its resources are also utilized by researchers from outside the university.
The main library buildings are located in the heart of the central campus, and its tall tower is often adorned with various images of the university.
The library's administration is comprised of the Central Library Committee, which is headed by the Deputy Director.
The library's senior management consists of the Central Library Committee, chaired by the Vice-Rector and including the Librarian as a member and rapporteur, in addition to representatives from the university's various colleges and schools, and two members from outside the university. The library has eleven branches:
The Sudan Library, located on Al-Jumhuriya Street, houses a comprehensive collection of books about Sudan and Sudanese authors. It includes an electronic library, a United Nations library, a law library, an engineering library, a mathematics library, a literature library, an economics library, a medical complex library, a Shambat complex library, an Omdurman education complex library, and a nursing library.
The library also comprises several internal departments: an acquisitions department, a classification and cataloging department, a periodicals department, a reader services department, and a training and continuing education department. Additionally, there is the Al-Shanqiti and Al-Tijani Al-Mahi Library (for postgraduate students). The main library and its branches contain over 300,000 titles across various disciplines.
